Getting Around Winnipeg
Winnipeg's public transportation system consists of local bus service and taxi service that uses major thoroughfares near landmarks to help passengers get around town. Visitors can efficiently travel to local attractions using the city's public transportation system because most buses and taxis run from 6 AM to 1 AM the next day. As a result, it's worth knowing how to get around Winnipeg using its public transportation system!
Here's a brief guide that can help visitors get the most out of Winnipeg's public transportation system.
Winnipeg's bus service includes 84 routes that cover each of Winnipeg's 12 Transportation Districts.
The first three of these routes serve the downtown area. These routes make stops near Whittier Park, the University of Winnipeg, and the intersection of Grant and Cambridge Streets. Visitors can use these stops as transfer points to other busses that can take them to area shops, restaurants and other attractions.
Passengers who need to use the other 80 or so routes can use the following downtown places as landmarks to get around town:
The Millennium Library (251 Donald Street) is one of the city's major landmarks. It is close to many restaurants on Main Street and to many government buildings.
Whittier Park (836 St Joseph Street) is one of downtown Winnipeg's major meeting places. Passengers can board several buses to go to area shops and cultural destinations quite easily.
The Winnipeg Convention Centre (375 York Avenue) is another major landmark. It serves as a major docking point for many buses and taxis. This is especially handy if visitors need to go or from the airport because the buses that go to the airport also go to the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Speaking of the airport, bus routes 15 and 20 make trips to and from the airport every 15 minutes.
The stop is located right outside of the south exit.
Finally, here are a few tips that can help you use Winnipeg's taxis well.
There are five taxis that run 24-hours a day in Winnipeg.
To find them, go online to the city of Winnipeg's website. Most of them will accept online reservations to make it easier to book a ride.
Be sure to also look for taxis near the Winnipeg Convention Centre and other major landmarks.
Most taxi companies send out taxis to major landmarks in the downtown area to help passengers get around the area. This can be especially handy if you're traveling around town after 8 PM because many buses seem to be crowded by this time.
Finally, try to book a taxi at least 45 minutes before you need one during the weekend.
This is a good idea because many people tend to go out partying and use the taxis to get home after a long night partying.
